Tetra Pak unveils first Arabia Sustainability Report with emphasis on circular economy

Recycling in Action: Tetra Pak’s new waste recycling facility at Union Paper Mills processes 10,000 tons of carton waste annually, advancing circularity in the UAE.

Tetra Pak has released its first-ever Arabia sustainability report, highlighting the company’s initiatives and investments in circularity and environmental sustainability across the Middle East. The report outlines Tetra Pak’s progress in key areas including circularity, climate action, food systems, and social responsibility.

A central focus of the report is Tetra Pak’s investment in recycling infrastructure. The company has committed over USD 3.6 million through partnerships with Union Paper Mills (UPM) in the UAE, Obeikan Paper Industries (OPI), and Saudi Top Plastics (STP) in Saudi Arabia. This funding is aimed at enhancing recycling capabilities for carton packages, with a notable agreement with UPM enabling the recycling of 10,000 tons of carton waste annually in the UAE.

Marcelo Piva, Sustainability Director for the Middle East and Africa at Tetra Pak, stated, “Our investments in recycling infrastructure are a testament to our commitment to sustainability and our support for customers in achieving their sustainability goals. This report highlights our ongoing efforts towards a circular economy and our contributions to a more sustainable future for the region.”

The report also details Tetra Pak’s notable circularity initiatives, including a water filtering station at the IFFCO Nabatat Plant in Saudi Arabia. This facility, developed in collaboration with IFFCO Group, recycles 95% of the water used, significantly reducing waste and improving resource use.

Additionally, Tetra Pak supports school milk programs in Yemen and Iraq, providing fortified milk to 10,000 children in Yemen and reaching 800,000 students across 1,300 schools in Iraq.

Eco-Friendly Operations: Tetra Pak’s Jeddah factory showcases its commitment to sustainability with innovative energy and water conservation technologies.

The company’s Jeddah factory, which exports to 11 countries in the Middle East, has implemented energy and water conservation measures and reduced material waste through advanced technologies. Tetra Pak’s efforts aim to set new industry standards and drive substantial change in the region’s sustainability practices.
