In a significant step towards a more sustainable future, Tetra Pak has released its Sustainability Report FY22, marking its 24th edition and showcasing the company’s continued commitment to sustainability. The report reveals an impressive 39% reduction in operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions globally, with a remarkable 84% of the company’s energy derived from renewable sources, placing Tetra Pak firmly on course to achieve net-zero emissions within its operations by 2030.

Notably, the sale of 8.8 billion plant-based packages and 11.9 billion plant-based caps contributed to savings of 131 kilotonnes of CO2. Additionally, Tetra Pak invested nearly €30 million to accelerate beverage carton collection and recycling while actively exploring the future of sustainable food in collaboration with food technology incubators and startups.

Regionally, Tetra Pak is making substantial investments to bolster sustainability in the Arabia Area, with a particular focus on Saudi Arabia and the UAE. In Saudi Arabia, the company has formed vital partnerships with local recycling entities and initiated school programs aimed at raising recycling awareness among children. Moreover, several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) have been signed with the Saudi Government to increase carton package collection in the Kingdom, in association with waste management companies and collectors.

In the UAE, Tetra Pak is actively engaged in shaping circular economy policies and regulations, including Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), through collaborations with the government and industry stakeholders. The company has also joined forces with Dubai-based Union Paper Industries (UPM) to establish a robust collection and recycling infrastructure, set to commence operations in late 2023 or early 2024.

Niels Hougaard, Managing Director of Tetra Pak Arabia Area, emphasized Tetra Pak’s commitment to achieving a low-carbon circular economy and eventually net-zero goals in the region, citing the company’s active participation in circular economy efforts.

Tetra Pak’s Sustainability Report FY22 not only celebrates past achievements but also outlines ambitious future plans to continue driving sustainability on a global and regional scale. With a 39% GHG reduction, expansion in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and a strong commitment to sustainability, Tetra Pak’s efforts remain at the forefront of the sustainable packaging industry.
