Tesco introduces eco-friendly toilet rolls from recycled cardboard

Tesco transforms cardboards into luxury toilet rolls and kitchen towels.

Tesco is pioneering a groundbreaking approach in sustainability by introducing a new line of toilet roll and kitchen towel crafted from recycled cardboard and pulp. Developed in collaboration with supplier WEPA, these products are set to redefine eco-friendly household essentials.

The innovative process involves transforming tons of corrugated cardboard, sourced in part from the surge in home delivery services during the pandemic, into soft and absorbent toilet paper and kitchen towel. By combining recycled cardboard with other paper sources and utilizing a sophisticated pulp production method, Tesco aims to offer environmentally conscious alternatives without compromising quality.

Philip Banks, Household Category Director at Tesco, highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating, “The explosion of home deliveries since the pandemic has created an abundance of recyclable cardboard boxes right on our doorstep. The manufacturing process our supplier has developed, that turns them into incredibly soft toilet roll and kitchen towel, allows us to create a second, sustainable use for them that couldn’t be more different!”

Moreover, the innovative pulp production process significantly reduces water, chemical, and energy usage compared to traditional methods reliant on tree fiber. The resulting unbleached paper not only boasts sustainability credentials but also features a distinctive beige hue, distinguishing it from conventional products.

The new range, comprising 100% Recycled Brown Kitchen Towel, Luxury Soft 100% Recycled Brown Toilet Tissue 4 Roll, and Luxury Soft 100% Recycled Brown Toilet Tissue 6 Long Roll, will initially debut in 100 Tesco Extra stores nationwide from the beginning of February, with plans for wider distribution in the future.
