Sonoco launches 95% paper-based, fully recyclable cans

Sonoco’s 95% paper-based, fully recyclable can from the EnviroCan® Paper Bottom range, offering a sustainable alternative for packaging.

Sonoco has introduced its latest innovation in sustainable packaging with a 95% paper-based can, part of its EnviroCan® Paper Bottom range. This new product, which is fully recyclable, is aimed at enhancing the recyclability of packaging while maintaining durability and functionality.

The 95% paper-based can replaces the conventional metal bottom with a fiber-based alternative, making it recyclable in household systems across the UK and mainland Europe. The lightweight design facilitates handling and transportation without compromising the can’s high barrier properties, which are crucial for product protection. This recyclable can is already being used for Nestlé coffee products.

Seán Cairns, President Global RPC at Sonoco, commented on the launch: “We are proud to have contributed to this latest innovation in the coffee market. The new recyclable paper-end can reflects an important step towards more sustainable packaging.”

The new paper-based can complies with UK packaging regulations, further strengthening Sonoco’s commitment to reducing environmental impact. By increasing the paper content in its packaging, the company continues to support industry-wide sustainability efforts.

Cairns added: “We hope the success of this project will inspire other companies to embrace more sustainable packaging solutions.”
