The Ministry of Environment & Climate Change has officially announced a comprehensive ban on the importation, trade, and usage of plastic bags across the nation, effective from June 30, 2024. This significant decision follows extensive consultations with various stakeholders, including the business community, environmental experts, and the general public, emphasizing the critical need to address the environmental challenges posed by plastic pollution.

The ban, enacted under the directives of H.E Amb Khadija Mohamed Makhzumi, is part of the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to environmental protection and sustainability. The Minister stated, “The decision to outlaw plastic bags underscores our resolve to safeguard our environment for future generations. It is a necessary step towards a cleaner, plastic-free future for Somalia.”

The Ministry is urging businesses and citizens alike to adhere to the ban and promote the use of environmentally friendly alternatives. Stricter penalties will be enforced for non-compliance, as part of the government’s comprehensive strategy to mitigate the impact of plastic waste on both urban and marine environments.

This initiative aligns with regional efforts and complies with the environmental protection standards set by the East African Community (EAC). Somalia now joins a growing number of nations taking decisive action against the use of lightweight single-use plastic bags, known for their persistent environmental impact and threat to marine life.

The Ministry will collaborate closely with all stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition away from plastic bags. To support this significant environmental policy change, public awareness campaigns and educational programs will be implemented in the coming months.
