Skanem Africa opens cutting-edge eco-friendly facility in Tilisi, Limuru

Skanem Africa’s new facility in Tilisi, designed for energy efficiency and sustainability, sets a benchmark with its IFC EDGE Advanced certification.

Skanem Africa has inaugurated its state-of-the-art label manufacturing facility in Tilisi, Limuru. The launch event was officiated by Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) Board Chairperson, Jane Karuku, alongside Vice Chairperson Hitesh Mediratta, Acting CEO Tobias Alando, and other board members. Distinguished guests and representatives from Skanem Africa were also in attendance to celebrate this milestone.

In her address, Karuku praised Skanem’s commitment to sustainable industrial growth, emphasizing the alignment of the company’s vision with KAM’s mission of fostering national prosperity through responsible industrialization. She highlighted Skanem’s initiatives to combat environmental challenges like plastic pollution and climate change. “Their dual focus on job creation and eco-conscious production is vital for Kenya’s economic and industrial advancement,” she noted.

Karuku also pointed out that Skanem’s use of recyclable and biodegradable materials exemplifies leadership in providing eco-friendly solutions, catering to the needs of an increasingly environmentally conscious market. She called on the manufacturing sector to embrace sustainability, positioning Kenya as a leader in green manufacturing and a model for responsible industrial development.

The facility in Tilisi, which spans 8,000 square meters, has earned an IFC EDGE Advanced certification for its sustainable design. To achieve this, the factory needed to demonstrate a reduction of at least 20% in energy, water, and material use compared to conventional structures. Notably, Skanem’s facility surpassed these requirements, with projected savings of 46% in energy, 48% in water, and 48% in embodied energy.

Simon Herd, Regional Director for Africa at Mace Group, expressed pride in the project’s achievements. “The development showcases the perfect balance between modernity and sustainability,” he remarked. The project, managed by MaceYMR, incorporated features such as water recycling, low-energy consumption systems, and solar PV installations.

The new facility not only advances Skanem Africa’s operations but also sets a benchmark for sustainable industrial practices in the region.
