SIG wins Green Packaging Star Award for aluminum-free packaging innovation

SIG wins the Green Packaging Star Award at Fachpack in Nürnberg for its pioneering Terra MidiBloc, the world’s first aluminum-free packaging material for aseptic cartons.

SIG has received the Green Packaging Star Award for its aluminum-free packaging solution, SIG Terra MidiBloc, marking a milestone in sustainable packaging innovation. The award, presented annually by *Kompack* magazine and the Austrian Research Institute of Chemistry, highlights advancements in eco-friendly packaging.

The SIG Terra Alu-free material, the first of its kind for aseptic carton packs, offers a composite structure without an aluminum layer, further lowering the carbon footprint of SIG’s standard cartons. Gmundner Dairy became the first company in Austria to adopt this solution, reducing its CO2 emissions by over 160 tonnes since launching the packaging last year.

Vanessa Bogner, Marketing Manager for SIG’s D-A-CH region, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainable packaging: “This recognition for SIG Terra Alu-free material is a great milestone. We aim to develop an aseptic, aluminum-free solution with at least 90% paper content by 2030, with an interim target of 85% by 2025.”

The award ceremony took place on September 25 at Fachpack in Nürnberg, Germany. Winning the Green Packaging Star Award qualifies SIG for the WorldStar Award, organized by the World Packaging Organization (WPO).

The jury highlighted that the SIG Terra solution cuts the carbon footprint of standard packaging materials by up to 23%, based on independent life-cycle assessments. The material consists of up to 82% FSC™-certified renewable paperboard, with ultra-thin polymer layers that ensure long product shelf life without refrigeration.

Christoph Engl, Managing Director of Gmundner Dairy, expressed pride in the partnership: “As the first to launch aluminum-free, shelf-stable milk cartons in Austria, we celebrate this award with SIG. Together, we are setting a new standard in sustainable packaging that meets the growing demand for low-carbon solutions from consumers and retailers alike.”
