SIG reported a 15% increase in sales for its SIG Terra portfolio of sustainable packaging materials for aseptic cartons in 2024. This growth exceeds the company’s overall 6% revenue increase in carton packaging, reflecting the growing demand for sustainable packaging solutions.
SIG Terra is designed to reduce the environmental impact of packaging. In 2024, approximately 1.7 billion liters of food were packed using SIG Terra materials. Since its launch, SIG has sold enough packs to fill about 6 billion liters of food.
The portfolio has seen strong uptake in Europe, where SIG Terra packaging accounted for 9.3% of food packed in SIG aseptic cartons. In China, sales of SIG Terra Alu-free + Full Barrier packaging have also been growing. Globally, SIG Terra solutions represented 4.1% of all food packed in SIG aseptic cartons.
“We are seeing increasing demand for sustainable packaging solutions, and the SIG Terra portfolio is a key part of that shift,” said Christoph Wegener, Chief Markets Officer at SIG.
SIG has introduced several innovations in packaging, including the first aluminum-free aseptic carton in 2010 and the first recycle-ready bag-in-box for water in 2021. The SIG Terra materials are compatible with existing filling lines, making it easier for customers to transition to more sustainable options without significant additional investment.
SIG continues to focus on reducing its carbon footprint and using fewer fossil-based materials as part of its broader sustainability efforts.
