Siegwerk, a global leader in printing inks and coatings for packaging applications, has joined forces with EPP Dubai, Borouge, and Windmöller & Hölscher to develop functional mono-material packaging structures tailored for food applications. This collaboration aims to demonstrate the efficient production of mono-material food packaging utilizing an innovative oxygen barrier, achieved through Siegwerk’s advanced Cirkit® OxyBar BC 1582 coating and a 2K overprint varnish, both applied in a single pass during rotogravure printing.
The Cirkit® OxyBar BC 1582 is a one-component barrier coating designed specifically for dry food, delivering exceptional oxygen barrier properties. Recognized by the APR for compliance with its Critical Guidance Protocol for PE Film & Flexible Packaging and tested by Institut cyclos HTP, this coating is compatible with PE recycling and can be printed inline on both flexo and gravure systems at speeds exceeding 150-200 m/min across various substrates while maintaining excellent transparency.
Through this project, the four partners showcase how Siegwerk’s printable coatings can effectively create the necessary functional properties for mono-material food packaging, highlighting the critical role of collaboration within the packaging value chain in driving innovation and developing new circular packaging solutions. Esra Torluo lu, Department Manager of Application Technology at Siegwerk Türkiye, stated, “Together with our partners, we can make mono-material packaging a reality and set new standards for the future of packaging.”
Siegwerk’s innovative in-line printable barrier coatings are instrumental in the transition from multi-material to fully recyclable mono-PE packaging, particularly for dry pet food. This advancement ensures that the performance standards of traditional multi-material structures are maintained while providing an entirely recyclable alternative, addressing the growing regulatory pressures for sustainable packaging in the EU.
With the necessity for designs that meet rigorous performance criteria—especially concerning food safety and barrier properties—Siegwerk’s CIRKIT GreaseBar and CIRKIT HeatGuard coatings enhance the durability of the mono-PE bag while remaining fully recyclable. These solvent-based coatings can be printed inline without compromising performance, ensuring adherence to the latest recycling guidelines.
This initiative underscores the significance of collaboration across the packaging value chain, showcasing how industry experts can create pioneering, sustainable packaging solutions that align with a circular economy. Siegwerk’s expertise spans the entire packaging lifecycle, facilitating the redesign of structures to achieve sustainability goals.
The shift to mono-PE structures simplifies the recycling process compared to multi-material solutions, and the successful transition depends on achieving equivalent packaging and process performance. By integrating specialized functional coatings with standard printing inks, Siegwerk demonstrates its commitment to advancing the packaging industry while supporting sustainability initiatives.
