SABIC, Napco, and FONTE have partnered to introduce Saudi Arabia’s first bread packaging made from fully recycled post-consumer plastic. This collaboration aims to promote the use of mass balance certified circular polyethylene from SABIC’s TRUCIRCLE™ portfolio for sustainable bread bags. Napco National, a Saudi manufacturer, produces the bags using food-contact PE grades derived from pyrolysis oil, an advanced recycling process.
SABIC announced this initiative as part of its TRUCIRCLE™ program, accelerating the circular plastic economy. FONTE, a major bakery player in Saudi Arabia, has begun using these bags for their Oat Arabic Bread. The bags contain 100% mass balanced certified content of recycled feedstock from post-consumer plastics, converted into pyrolysis oil. SABIC then uses this oil to produce new polymers at its Jubail plant.
Sanjay Mishra, SABIC’s ETP and Performance Polymers head, said, “We are pushing for innovative business models to transform our industry and prevent the waste of valuable material.” Mohammed Binmahfoodh, CEO at FONTE, highlighted their commitment to addressing plastic challenges, calling the initiative a step towards much-needed change.
Mohammed Binmahfoodh, CEO at Masdar Alhayat for Food Industries (FONTE), added, “As Masdar’s leading brand, FONTE is fully committed to addressing the plastic challenge that all food producers are facing. While this new bread bag is just one of our products, it demonstrates how important value chain players can work together to bring about much-needed change.”
Chadi Radi, Senior Director at Napco National, commented, “Napco is firmly dedicated to the advancement of sustainable packaging across various sectors in the plastic industry within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and throughout the Gulf region.”
