London, UK – July 18, 2023
PepsiCo, the global leader in food, snack, and beverage production, has introduced a groundbreaking multipack concept for Snack A Jacks in the United Kingdom. This innovative approach aims to reduce material waste significantly.
Traditionally, Snack A Jacks have been sold in five individual portion packs housed within a larger bag. However, the company is now pioneering a unique multipack labeling system that results in an 86% reduction in material usage compared to the previous packaging solution.
The revamped packaging not only cuts down on material waste but also provides additional space for branding and promotional messages. It offers added convenience for both consumers and retailers. The new labeling system allows for easy separation of rice cakes, pack by pack. Furthermore, the sturdy design of these multipacks streamlines shelf stacking, making it more efficient for retailers.
A key sustainability aspect of this innovative packaging lies in its recyclability. Both the multipack label and the individual packets are crafted from the same recyclable material, enabling them to be disposed of in the same recycling stream. This ensures that the new multipack solution complies with the UK On-Pack Recycling Label Scheme (OPRL) and can be recycled at designated flexible packaging collection points in supermarkets throughout the UK.
The launch of these environmentally friendly multipacks is a part of PepsiCo Positive, the company’s health and sustainability transformation plan. This initiative underscores PepsiCo’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2040.
Gareth Callan, Packaging Sustainability Lead at PepsiCo UK & Ireland, expressed the company’s dedication to reducing virgin fossil plastic use. He stated, “Our new bagless multipack design is an innovative example of the solutions we’re exploring to reduce virgin fossil plastic use across our portfolio. We’re looking forward to assessing this new format as part of our commitment to creating a world where packaging never becomes waste.”
In line with their sustainability goals, PepsiCo Europe has set a target to eliminate virgin fossil-based plastic in their crisp and snack bags by 2030. This ambitious undertaking applies to a range of popular UK brands, including Snack A Jacks, Walkers, Doritos, Quavers, Wotsits, and Pipers, and will be achieved by incorporating 100% recycled or renewable materials.
PepsiCo’s latest initiative marks a significant step toward a more sustainable future, aligning with global efforts to reduce waste and combat plastic pollution.
