Paboco and Blue Ocean Closures have introduced the packaging industry’s first market-ready paper bottle and fiber-based cap. This innovation is available now, with consumer products featuring the new packaging expected to launch in early 2025.
Paboco’s new product line builds on years of experience with paper-based packaging. “We are changing the material options in the packaging industry, focusing on lightweight solutions,” said Michael Michelsen, Commercial Director of Paboco. “This is not just a concept but a new packaging reality.”
The combined package weighs under 16 grams, including an HDPE barrier of less than 2 grams. With its minimal material use, the entire package is recyclable as paper. Blue Ocean Closures contributed a fiber-based cap that fits various bottle types, aiming to reduce reliance on plastic. “The fiber closure sets a new standard and expands options for reducing plastics,” said Ola Tönnberg, Chief Commercial Officer of Blue Ocean Closures.
This development aligns with Paboco’s goal of scaling paper bottle production by the end of 2025 and advancing bio-based packaging solutions. The collaboration benefits from the Pioneer Community, a network of early supporters, including The Absolut Group.
“We are proud to collaborate with Paboco and Blue Ocean Closures,” said Elin Furelid, Director of Future Packaging at The Absolut Group. “This launch marks a significant step toward sustainable packaging, and we look forward to learning from it.”
The paper bottle and fiber cap will be showcased at upcoming events, including CPHI in Milan on October 8 and Scanpack in Gothenburg from October 22-25. Selected partners can now place orders for the new packaging solution.
