New recyclable packaging from Amazon arrives in the UK

Amazon’s new recyclable paper-padded envelope comes in three sizes, offering lightweight, eco-friendly protection for your deliveries.

Amazon has introduced a new recyclable packaging solution designed specifically for UK customers. The company has developed a shock-proof, lightweight paper envelope that can be recycled at home, eliminating the use of plastic materials. This initiative follows Amazon’s commitment to reducing unnecessary packaging.

In collaboration with packaging expert Mondi, Amazon has created a paper-padded envelope with a shock-absorbent lining made entirely of paper. Unlike previous envelopes lined with bubble wrap, these new envelopes protect deliveries while maintaining environmental sustainability.

“Amazon customers want rightsized, recyclable packaging that minimizes waste and ensures damage-free delivery,” said Thais Blumer, European Head of Sustainable Packaging for Amazon. She added that the company optimizes packaging types, materials, and weights to enhance circularity, reduce waste, and lower carbon emissions without compromising safety or functionality.

The design of the new envelope keeps products securely in place while absorbing stress during transit. Due to its lightweight construction, this envelope saves an average of 44 grams of packaging per shipment compared to traditional cardboard boxes. Its flexible structure allows for efficient filling, reducing wasted space and eliminating the need for additional padding materials.

“Achieving both low weight and maximum protection with a 100% recyclable paper envelope was not an easy task,” Blumer stated. “However, these envelopes are easy to pack, simple for customers to recycle, and enable damage-free deliveries.”

Pedro Cuesta, a packaging engineer at Mondi, noted that extensive testing led to the selection of open-flute padding—combining a flat paper sheet with a ridged paper sheet—as the optimal solution. “Creating a plastic-free padded mailer for ecommerce packaging has been an exciting collaborative journey towards a more sustainable future,” he said.

This new packaging is now being delivered to customers across the UK.
