Nestlé Purina expands pyramid-shaped cat food with innovative packaging

Purina’s new pyramid-shaped wet cat food, featuring innovative ‘easy release’ packaging, is set to expand across Europe and the U.S.

Nestlé Purina PetCare is expanding its pyramid-shaped wet cat food in Europe and the United States as part of its strategy to focus on fewer but more impactful innovations.

In Europe, the new variant—featuring transparent jelly with finely diced tender cuts in salmon, chicken, or white fish—will launch under the Purina Gourmet Revelations brand across 15 markets. A wider rollout is planned for 2026. The product was developed based on research by Purina scientists, who found that the jelly pyramid shape encourages natural feline eating behaviors, including biting, licking, and chewing.

The ‘easy release’ packaging allows the food to maintain its pyramid shape when served, eliminating the need for cutlery or cleanup. This addition joins the existing mousse-based pyramid with cascading gravy in the Gourmet Revelations range.

In the United States, Purina will expand distribution of its mousse-based Fancy Feast Gems pyramid nationwide, following an initial limited launch.

Sheri Smithey, Head of Nestlé R&D for PetCare, noted: “This innovation stems from our deep understanding of the feline species and their unique tastes and behaviors.”

Dan Smith, Head of the PetCare global strategic business unit, added: “Our patented packaging design is truly unique in the category and helps to offer a premium serve, elevating the experience for pet owners.”

Nestlé has identified pyramid-shaped wet cat food as one of six key growth areas for 2025, emphasizing its focus on R&D, packaging innovation, and premiumization in the pet food sector. Wet cat food accounts for about 30% of Purina’s global sales, with strong demand in Europe, where cats outnumber dogs in many markets.

With pet ownership projected to grow, particularly among cats and small dogs, premium pet food remains a key driver of market expansion.
