Nampak Liquid Cartons and Woodlands Dairy have unveiled South Africa’s first tethered cap carton, a move aimed at reducing plastic pollution. This innovative design prevents the cap from being separated from the carton during recycling, ensuring a more sustainable packaging solution.
Raymond Dube, from Nampak Liquid Cartons, highlighted the importance of brands making sustainable choices, stating, “Opting for packaging that is sustainable and ensures the quality of a product’s contents is one of the ways brands can have an impact.”
Woodlands Dairy is leading the way by being the first to adopt this tethered cap design in South Africa. Designed by Swiss-based company Svalinn, the tethered cap not only benefits the environment but also resonates with consumers. Research by Capgemini shows that over half of consumers have an emotional connection with sustainable brands, with 64% stating that buying sustainable products brings them happiness.
Additionally, a study by Carnelley Rangecroft Consultancy for Nampak Liquid Cartons revealed that 90% of South Africans prefer cartons with caps, citing the need for a functional design that allows beverages to be stored and consumed later.
Marisa Maccaferri of Woodlands Dairy emphasized the importance of meeting consumer demands for sustainable products, stating, “Consumers and their buying power are driving change. It’s therefore important that we not only supply them with products that meet these consumer demands, but to also consider how we can reduce the impact of packaging waste.”
Woodlands Dairy plans to introduce the tethered cap carton for its 2-litre milk cartons in March, with the new packaging expected to be available on shelves by the end of the month.
