Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, has completed a life cycle assessment (LCA) for its paper-based Hug&Hold solution. The assessment aimed to determine the environmental impact of Hug&Hold compared to conventional low-density polyethylene (LDPE) shrink wrap used for bundling six 1.5-liter PET beverage bottles.
Hug&Hold is a sustainable, fully recyclable alternative to plastic shrink wrap. It consists of two components: a kraft paper sleeve for secure transportation and a corrugated carrying handle that holds the bottles by the neck. This design ensures both convenience and strength.
The LCA, conducted using the Environmental Footprint (EF) method, assessed 16 environmental indicators, including climate change, fossil resource use, and water use. The results show that Hug&Hold has a significantly lower impact across multiple categories. Specifically, it has a 43% lower carbon footprint than virgin LDPE shrink wrap and a 15% lower carbon footprint than LDPE shrink wrap made from 100% recycled content.
Silvia Hanzelova, Sales Director for Speciality Kraft Paper, emphasized the importance of the LCA findings. “This assessment is critical for our customers’ decision-making process, ensuring we continue to develop sustainable solutions aligned with our MAP2030 commitments,” she said.
Mondi commissions ISO-compliant LCAs for its products to provide a data-driven assessment of their environmental impacts. These assessments are crucial for helping customers evaluate the sustainability of their packaging choices. The Hug&Hold LCA supports Mondi’s goal of creating innovative, eco-friendly packaging solutions.
