Marigold shifts to Sonoco’s fully recyclable EnviroCan® packaging

Marigold Health Foods’ new fully recyclable EnviroCan® packaging made from paper-based materials, supporting sustainability and eco-friendly practices.

Marigold Health Foods has announced a switch to Sonoco’s fully recyclable EnviroCan® packaging for its natural and organic products. The new packaging, made from paper-based materials, supports Marigold’s commitment to sustainability while addressing the growing demand for environmentally friendly food packaging.

The packaging will be used for products such as nutritional yeast, bouillon, stock cubes, sauces, and plant-based meat and fish alternatives. Previously packaged in containers with a cardboard body and metal base, Marigold’s new EnviroCan® features a paper bottom, which can be easily recycled in kerbside collections across the UK. The change aligns with UK and European recycling regulations and reduces packaging challenges associated with non-recyclable materials.

The development of the fully recyclable packaging took two years, involving investment in new machinery to replace the metal base with Sonoco’s paper-based alternative. “We are thrilled to introduce this innovative, fully recyclable packaging solution in partnership with Sonoco,” said Peter Langsam, Managing Director of Marigold. “This development underscores our commitment to sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint while maintaining the quality our customers expect.”

The packaging is primarily made from paperboard, with a small percentage of plastic and aluminium to ensure product protection and shelf life. The can-body is made from 95% paper, sourced primarily from recycled materials, including 60% post-consumer recycled fibre. It is recyclable in the UK’s paper waste stream and displays the On-Pack Recycling Label (OPRL) to guide consumers.

Marigold’s move to EnviroCan® has resulted in a significant reduction in packaging weight, cutting transport fuel consumption and lowering its environmental impact. The company has been shortlisted for the Grocer Gold Awards in the Composite Packaging category for its new paper-based design.
