drupa 2024 attendees can expect significant advancements in sustainable packaging solutions from KYMC and Toyo Ink Co., Ltd. KYMC, a prominent flexo printing machine manufacturer, and Toyo Ink, a leader in ink and coating solutions, are showcasing their collaborative efforts in developing environmentally friendly packaging technologies.
Toyo Ink has introduced a range of functional inks and coatings tailored for sustainable packaging applications. KYMC complements this with printing machines designed to print and coat simultaneously with these eco-friendly materials. This collaboration aims to address the sustainability challenges in functional packaging.
Traditional functional packaging often involves multi-layered films laminated together, making recycling difficult and inefficient. Additionally, solvent-based inks, commonly used for their ease of drying and production efficiency, release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that contribute to air pollution.
New technologies now support mono-material production, using a single type of substrate to replicate the functions of multi-layer packaging. This simplifies recycling and reduces associated costs and efforts. Toyo Ink’s Z327 heat-resistant overprint varnish and Z307 barrier coating are notable innovations. The Z327 varnish provides a heat-sealing temperature of up to 150 degrees Celsius, preventing heat shrinkage and adhesion issues. The Z307 barrier coating improves oxygen and aroma barriers in mono-material packaging, significantly enhancing its sustainability.
KYMC’s advanced machinery plays a crucial role in this sustainable shift. Their printing presses, coating machines, and lamination machines are designed for efficient production with sustainable materials. The presses feature advanced drying systems with options like hot air, UV, and NIR drying, as well as sophisticated registration systems for easy gloss or matte coating applications. KYMC’s hybrid presses can combine printing, coating, and lamination processes, further enhancing production efficiency.
“Our collaboration with Toyo Ink at drupa 2024 showcases our commitment to building a more sustainable packaging ecosystem,” says a KYMC spokesperson.
The joint efforts of KYMC and Toyo Ink at drupa 2024 underscore their dedication to advancing sustainable packaging technologies for a greener future.
