UAE American fried chicken brand KFC has committed to use 100% fiber-based packaging from certified or recycled sources by the end of 2020 throughout MENA.
Mr. Sabir Sami, General Manager, KFC, Yum! Brands, ME- North Africa- Pak, Turkey and Asia added, “At KFC, environmental sustainability is a core business focus for us, and we continuously work towards developing new solutions that help us better our waste and packaging management. By adopting fiber-based solution for our packaging we believe we can make a truly positive impact while also providing sustainable choices to our consumers.”
To ensure this change in the MENA region, KFC will work with over 39 suppliers to introduce 100% fiber-based packaging across all the 768 franchised units.
It aligns with the brand’s global commitment to use sustainable packaging, with plans for all of KFC’s plastic-based packaging to be recoverable or reusable by 2025.
The restaurant chain is conducting an audit of current systems with franchisees to identify plastic waste reduction opportunities; partnering with suppliers to identify sustainable packaging alternatives for items like straws, plastic bags, cutlery and lids; and setting market-specific goals to reduce, reuse and recycle.
