JYSK cuts 78 tonnes of plastic with new curtain packaging

JYSK’s new cardboard packaging for ready-made curtains reduces plastic use by 78 tonnes annually.

JYSK, an international home furnishing retailer with Scandinavian roots, has introduced a significant change in its packaging approach. The company is transitioning from plastic to cardboard bellybands for ready-made curtains, aiming to save 78 tonnes of plastic annually. This initiative is part of JYSK’s broader strategy to reduce plastic use across its product lines.

Founded by Lars Larsen in Denmark in 1979, JYSK now operates over 3,400 stores and webshops in 48 countries, including the United Arab Emirates. The move to cardboard packaging reflects the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Lene Østerberg, Category Buyer for Window Dressing at JYSK, emphasized the dual benefits of the new packaging: “The primary reason for this change is to reduce our use of plastic, and 78 tonnes are quite significant. The new packaging also enhances product visibility and offers a more consistent look in our stores.”

While the transition is underway, plastic packaging will remain in stores until current stocks are sold. JYSK is also assessing packaging improvements for other products, including blinds.
