Innovation in labeling: Sappi and Jungdruck bring multi-layer designs to beverage industry

Sappi and Jungdruck’s multi-layer labels redefine beverage branding with creativity and functionality.

Sappi and Jungdruck have introduced a novel multi-layer label for beverage bottles, leveraging the wet-strength Parade Label WS Gloss paper from Sappi. The innovation was unveiled at BrauBeviale 2024, a key event for the beverage industry.

Traditionally used in chemical and feed industries, multi-layer wet-glue labels are now being adapted for the beverage sector. These labels provide additional space for product information and promotional content. The showcased example featured a recipe for beer-based barbecue sauce hidden beneath the first foldable layer of a beer bottle label.

Gernot Jung, Managing Director of Jungdruck, highlighted the versatility of these labels, stating, “The additional layers allow manufacturers to include multilingual legal information or promotional content such as QR codes or contests. This approach opens new possibilities for marketing and customer engagement.”

Jungdruck, a Radevormwald-based printing company specializing in wet-glue labels for over a decade, collaborated closely with Sappi to ensure the label’s quality and functionality. The Parade Label WS Gloss paper was chosen for its wet-strength properties and superior surface quality, enabling precise printing and finishing. “High quality and reliable delivery are crucial,” noted Jung. “We trust Sappi for its consistency and processability, which are essential for our customers’ production schedules.”

The concept for the beverage industry pilot project was first discussed at FACHPACK, where both companies were exhibitors. “We saw great potential for this innovation in the brewing sector,” said Stefan Raabe, Sales Manager at Sappi. “With beer consumption declining, breweries are under pressure to stand out. These multi-layer labels offer a unique marketing platform to engage customers.”

At BrauBeviale, the labels were demonstrated on returnable beer bottles, featuring UV varnish finishing to enhance their tactile appeal. Raabe emphasized, “This is a game-changer for breweries and beverage manufacturers, offering creative advertising opportunities and a distinct edge at the point of sale.”

The partnership between Sappi and Jungdruck also ensures a seamless transition from single-layer to multi-layer labels, with technical support included, making the innovation accessible without significant investment.
