Henkel Adhesive Technologies achieves 100% renewable electricity in MEA sites

Henkel Adhesive Technologies’ sites in the Middle East and Africa now run entirely on renewable electricity.

Henkel Adhesive Technologies has achieved a significant sustainability milestone by transitioning all its manufacturing sites in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region to 100% renewable electricity. This change eliminates approximately 10,471 tons of CO2 emissions annually.

The company’s eight MEA Adhesive Technologies sites, located across six countries, have switched to renewable electricity sources, thereby reducing their Scope 2 emissions. This transition involves a mix of on-site solar installations and external renewable sources, including hydroelectric and wind energy. Specific initiatives include photovoltaic (PV) solar and hydroelectricity in Turkey and Kenya, wind energy in South Africa, and solar power in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Henkel’s efforts to eliminate these emissions are equivalent to removing the carbon footprint of around 2,500 gasoline-powered cars or approximately 2,700 flights from New York to Singapore annually. This move marks a substantial environmental impact and sets a benchmark for the industry.

Veerabhadra Konakalla, Head of Safety Health & Environment at Henkel Adhesive Technologies IMEA, stated, “By achieving complete decarbonization of our Scope 2 operations in our MEA sites, we’ve turned our commitments into tangible progress on the path to achieving climate-positive operations by 2030. This achievement is a testament to the zeal of our IMEA team to drive transformative environmental change and create a more sustainable future.”

This milestone aligns with Henkel’s 2030+ Sustainability Ambition Framework, which aims for climate-positive operations by 2030 and a net-zero pathway. Henkel’s sustainability strategy underscores its commitment to “Purposeful Growth,” aiming to create more value for stakeholders, develop business responsibly, and reinforce its leading role in sustainability.

Henkel Adhesive Technologies’ achievement demonstrates a significant step towards environmental sustainability and showcases the company’s dedication to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting renewable energy sources.
