Google is taking steps to address the growing plastic waste problem by launching the Single-Use Plastics Challenge, aimed at reducing the amount of plastic waste produced in food services.
The challenge invites food and beverage companies with plastic-free packaging solutions to apply and test their products in Google’s cafes and MicroKitchens.
Successful applicants will have the opportunity to pitch their products to Google and leading global food operators.
The initiative is being run in collaboration with Canteen and other food service partners, with products required to meet U.S. federal, state and local food safety regulations, as well as Google’s program standards for health, environmental, social, and financial considerations.
Google’s efforts to reduce its plastic footprint include partnering with distributors that use more reusable and durable containers to transport goods, and shifting away from single-use plastics in their operations.
The company hopes to inspire others to join them in building a more sustainable future through a circular economy that keeps materials, products, and services in circulation for as long as possible.
