Ericsson, iot squared, and Alshaya Group launch Connected Recycling Platform in Saudi Arabia

Ericsson and stc Group’s iot squared partner with Alshaya Group to launch the Ericsson Connected Recycling platform in Saudi Arabia, advancing circular economy efforts.

Ericsson and stc Group’s iot squared have introduced the Ericsson Connected Recycling platform in Saudi Arabia, with Alshaya Group as the first adopter. The initiative aims to enhance waste management by diverting over 50% of Alshaya’s waste from landfills to recyclers, enabling the development of packaging with recycled content and improving waste tracking.

As the local partner, iot squared will oversee the platform’s implementation with enterprises like Alshaya Group. Ericsson, drawing on expertise from markets and knowledge partners such as Tetra Pak, has developed the solution to facilitate material tracking, waste monetization, and automated environmental reporting.

Alshaya will collaborate with partners, including Obeikan Paper Industries (OPI) and Tetra Pak, to integrate recycled content into packaging and monitor waste flows in real-time. The platform is expected to streamline waste repurposing and support circular economy goals.

Othman Aldahash, CEO of iot squared, emphasized the role of technology in sustainable waste management, stating, “This initiative demonstrates how digital solutions can drive sustainability and create business value.”

Seneca Cottom, Head of Sustainability at Alshaya Group, noted the significance of digital waste tracking, adding, “The marketplace functionality allows us to repurpose waste efficiently, reinforcing our commitment to responsible operations.”

Marcelo Piva, Sustainability Director for the Middle East & Africa at Tetra Pak, highlighted the potential for industry collaboration, saying, “This partnership builds on the region’s recycling infrastructure and supports greater circularity efforts in the food and beverage sector.”

Håkan Cervell, Vice President and Head of Ericsson Saudi Arabia, described the launch as an example of global technology supporting industry transformation, with anticipated benefits for the environment and retail sector in Saudi Arabia.

The platform aligns with broader sustainability initiatives and positions Saudi Arabia as a key market for circular economy advancements.
