Emirates Biotech has appointed SAMSUNG E&A as the contractor for its planned Polylactic Acid (PLA) production plant in Abu Dhabi. The facility, part of the Falcon PLA Project, will focus on producing biodegradable plastics and is expected to be operational by early 2028.
The agreement, signed on 14 April at Emirates Biotech’s head office, marks the initial phase of the collaboration. Under the pre-EPC contract, SAMSUNG E&A will manage engineering, procurement, and construction activities for the project.
The PLA plant will be located in the KEZAD free zone, benefiting from access to Khalifa Port and other logistics infrastructure. The company has already selected Sulzer as the technology provider for the PLA production process. SAMSUNG E&A will be responsible for integrating Sulzer’s proprietary technology and equipment into the facility.
Marc Verbruggen, CEO of Emirates Biotech, described the agreement as a major milestone for the company. “Selecting SAMSUNG E&A as our contractor is another significant step toward making our vision a reality,” Verbruggen said. “The Falcon PLA Project will not only set new benchmarks for scale and efficiency but will also play a key role in providing industries with a viable, sustainable alternative to fossil-based plastics.”
Hong Namkoong, President and CEO of SAMSUNG E&A, said the company is committed to delivering the project successfully. “We are honored that Emirates Biotech has entrusted us with the Falcon PLA Project. This achievement strengthens our competitive position and marks our entry into the eco-friendly plastics sector,” he said.
The initiative supports Emirates Biotech’s broader goal of promoting sustainable materials and advancing the shift toward a circular economy.
