Dubai Duty Free launches upcycling initiative for perfume tester bottles

Dubai Duty Free partners with RECAPP by Veolia to upcycle glass perfume tester bottles, supporting UAE’s circular economy.

Dubai Duty Free, in collaboration with RECAPP by Veolia, has introduced a new initiative to recycle empty perfume tester bottles across its outlets at Dubai International Airport. This initiative, part of RECAPP’s glass recycling program, aims to repurpose the glass from these bottles and contribute to the UAE’s circular economy.

As part of the effort, 30 recycling boxes have been installed in Dubai Duty Free perfume outlets. These boxes will collect empty glass tester bottles, which will then be processed by RECAPP, Veolia’s digital recycling service. The collected glass will be converted into glass cullets, which will serve as raw materials for producing new glass bottles. This process is intended to reduce the need for virgin materials, lower energy consumption, and decrease CO2 emissions.

Ramesh Cidambi, Managing Director of Dubai Duty Free, commented on the initiative: “We are delighted to launch this pioneering initiative and work with RECAPP by Veolia to support the UAE’s Circular Economy Policy. With perfumes being our top-selling category, this program helps prevent glass tester bottles from ending up in landfills.”

Jerome Viricel, General Manager at RECAPP by Veolia, emphasized the importance of the partnership: “This collaboration with Dubai Duty Free underscores our commitment to sustainable consumption in the retail sector and aligns with our strategy to promote bottle-to-bottle recycling. The program will offer retailers convenient ways to responsibly dispose of glass perfume bottles, reinforcing recycling culture as the UAE marks the extended Year of Sustainability.”

The initiative will engage all of Dubai Duty Free’s fragrance suppliers in a year-long partnership, promoting sustainability beyond recycling. RECAPP by Veolia will also provide regular reports on the environmental impact of the program, including CO2 emissions reduction, energy savings, and other key recycling metrics.
