DS Smith introduces DryPack solution for sustainable seafood packaging

DryPack is a 100% water-resistant, fully recyclable box designed to keep fresh fish below 40 degrees Fahrenheit for over 40 hours when packed with ice.

DS Smith, a global provider of sustainable corrugated packaging, launched its DryPack seafood box in North America, offering a sustainable alternative to non-recyclable expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam boxes. DryPack is a 100% water-resistant, fully recyclable box designed to keep fresh fish below 40 degrees Fahrenheit for over 40 hours when packed with ice.

The DryPack box is approved for air freight by the International Air Transport Association, enabling seafood processors to safely ship fresh fish over short and long distances. The boxes ship flat, requiring 81% less space than EPS foam boxes, and are easy to assemble manually or with automation equipment.

Steven Rose, Managing Director of Packaging for DS Smith North America Packaging and Paper (NAPP), stated, “DS Smith is excited to provide the North American seafood industry with a proven, 100% recyclable, fiber-based box that meets uncompromising standards for transporting fresh fish.”

DS Smith NAPP manufactures DryPack boxes in the U.S. using its Greencoat® technology, a food-safe, moisture-resistant, recyclable coated box solution with USDA, CFIA, FDA, and FBA certifications. This technology is also used in the fresh poultry and produce industries to replace non-recyclable, wax-coated boxes.

Kvarøy Arctic, a Norwegian salmon producer, relies on DryPack for its recyclability and reliability. Alf-Gøran Knutsen, CEO of Kvarøy Arctic, commented, “Our packaging in corrugated board is a win for both the environment and our brand.”

DS Smith is showcased DryPack at the Seafood Processing North America tradeshow in Boston, March 10-12, booth #1671. The company aims to accelerate plastic replacement in packaging and has replaced 762 million problem plastics with fiber-based alternatives since 2020. DS Smith is committed to supporting the Circular Economy by creating recyclable or reusable packaging and helping customers design out hard-to-recycle plastics.
