Domino supports manufacturers in meeting stricter 2D code regulations

Precision in Action: Domino’s label overprint solutions deliver clarity and compliance for regulated industries.

Domino Printing Sciences (Domino) is gearing up to assist manufacturers in meeting increasingly stringent 2D code requirements across various regulated industries. The move aligns with global efforts to enhance product traceability, combat counterfeiting, and improve consumer safety.

“With GS1 Sunrise 2027 and tighter 2D code regulations on the horizon, we are committed to understanding industry challenges and providing practical solutions,” said James Cutforth, Domino’s Head of Global Regulated Sectors.

The adoption of advanced variable data codes, such as Data Matrix and QR codes, is expanding across sectors. These codes offer higher data capacity and accuracy compared to traditional barcodes. Regulatory requirements for 2D codes are now in place for pharmaceuticals, medical devices, tobacco, food, alcoholic beverages, and agri-inputs. Notable regulations include the EU Falsified Medicines Directive, US Drug Supply Chain Security Act, and India Insecticides Rules 2023.

In the pharmaceutical industry, 2D codes have become essential for compliance and improving patient safety. Domino has developed solutions like the K600G printer to meet the demand for serialised, dosage-level codes, ensuring production lines can handle high-speed, precise printing. Bart Vansteenkiste, Global Life Sciences Sector Manager, noted, “We understand the complexities of equipping production lines for these codes and their importance in reducing medication errors.”

Domino’s collaboration with GS1 and expertise in variable data printing spans over two decades. Its portfolio includes the Gx-Series thermal inkjet printers, K-Series high-resolution inkjet printers, and D-Series CO2 laser coders. Recent innovations include the Bottle Closure Printing Stations, designed for HDPE bottle caps in response to upcoming Korean legislation banning external labels on bottled water.

Cutforth emphasized Domino’s dedication: “Global businesses trust us to provide the expertise needed to navigate regulatory changes. We’re ready to support the transition to 2D code applications.”
