DEWA Advances Circular Economy and Waste-to-Energy Initiatives

DEWA drives waste-to-energy and recycling.

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is playing a pivotal role in supporting the UAE’s integrated approach to sustainable waste management through active implementation of the Dubai Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2021–2041. The strategy focuses on innovation in waste reduction, recycling, and energy conversion.

“Inspired by the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and the UAE Circular Economy Policy 2021–2031, we work to build a sustainable city aligned with global standards,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA. “Our efforts in clean energy, circular economy, and climate action are key to this transformation.”

DEWA’s Circular Economy Strategy, built on five key principles, promotes resource optimization and long-term sustainability. Its tailored waste management systems ensure proper segregation, compliance, and reduced waste volumes across all operations.

A landmark project includes DEWA’s partnership with Dubai Municipality to source electricity from the Dubai Waste Management Centre (DWMC) in Warsan—one of the world’s largest and most efficient waste-to-energy plants. Additionally, DEWA is advancing biogas-to-electricity projects and sustainable manufacturing through local partnerships.

Smart recycling machines installed in DEWA’s offices have diverted over 12,000 kilograms of plastic and cans from landfill. DEWA also operates a fully digital service platform, including a 100% paperless initiative and the region’s first data centre powered by waste-to-energy.

In 2024, DEWA’s environmental campaigns involved 500+ volunteers planting 6,850 mangrove trees and removing 256 kg of plastic from Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary. Fourteen internal awareness activities promoted responsible consumption, recycling, and sustainability practices.

These integrated efforts reinforce DEWA’s commitment to net zero by 2050 and its role in advancing environmental stewardship across Dubai.
