Packaging MEA Contributing Editor Doaa bin Thabit talks with Dalal Shami Al Shihabi,, Production Director at Jeddah Graphic Center, who opens up about her journey as a working woman.
You enter a packaging factory and between the corners of the place you hear the noise of the printing machines, the smell of ink and paper. As you walk from one production stage to another, you’ll meet many female faces. Initially you are astonished by their presence, and then these faces will take you to a full space with more than 80 women working in the field of packaging. Behind each of them is a story of persistence, ambition and dedication to support her family and contribute to her community.
We met Dalal, director of the production department at Jeddah Graphic Center, to take inspiration from her story filled with many deep meanings that reflect the role of women in the packaging industry.
Doaa bin Thabit (DBT): How did you join the company? How long have you worked? What challenges have you faced?
Dalal Shami Al Shihabi (DSS): I graduated from secondary school and worked in a small printing press for two years, as a production worker for the first year, and by the second year I was supervising production. The number of workers was small; 15 women.
After the women’s section was closed, I started to look for a new job and by chance I saw an advertisement for Jeddah Graphic Center seven years ago, and based on my previous experience, I was chosen to be a supervisor for the women’s department. We started with 30 women workers, then the number was increased to 85 women after proving the ability of women to produce with the smallest details and care, in addition to caring for hygiene by wearing gloves when working, covering their hair and cleaning the place.
During my nine-year career, the biggest challenge I always face is the team’s fear of any new experience, so I enhance their confidence in their own capabilities and my work experience by starting it in front of them. Also, the competition between the team members, starting with me when I was chosen out of 35 workers to be the supervisor. This caused jealousy at first, but now we are like one family living under the same roof.
(DBT):What do you enjoy most about your work?
(DSS): What pleases me most is our ability to deliver work ahead of schedule. In addition to that, as a supervisor, my colleagues and I collaborate by bringing symbolic gifts from our own expenses to encourage the team and the most accomplished workers, and we allow them time off to take exceptional breaks.
One of the accomplishments that I am happy to mention is that I was able to implement a production plan for an order in record time without seeking the help of an external team, and I am happy with all my accomplishments in satisfying the clients.
(DBT): What do you like most in the work environment? And what would you change to improve the work environment?
(DSS): What I liked most is the support of the dedicated management; anything that the women’s department needs is offered and implemented immediately. For example, a prayer area was provided, also a spacious place to rest, in addition to a fully equipped kitchen and clean bathrooms and cleaners. The most important thing in the work environment is the existence of mutual respect between all.
If there was a change, it could be to divide the place according to the stage of production and its expansion.
(DBT):Today, with leadership enabled for women, how do you see the future for the young Saudi woman?

(DSS):Today, all fields are open for women. They are appreciated and supported. Most workers come to the factory today with their own car, and some accompany their female colleagues for a small symbolic fee instead of paying a driver.
My family is very proud of me and they continue to encourage me. We have many mother workers who are the most diligent and supportive of their families. Some of them are divorced and take full responsibility of their homes; some of them are divorced mothers who bear responsibility for the income of the home as well.
(DBT):Tell us a bit about your education. And what is your message to women about life after graduation?
(DSS): I only finished high school and my message is: If you cannot complete your studies, professional work is always available as the government supports professional women. They are important contributors to society. What I hope for on the educational side is to strengthen my English for easy communication with technical experts.
(DBT): What encouraged you to enter the printing and packaging industry? How do you see women in this area? Can we see a factory led by a woman one day?
(DSS): I entered this industry by chance, but I enjoyed it so much that I used to spend hours without sensing the passing of time. I’ve continued until now for nine continuous years because of its art and creativity – if I find a box at home, I open it and explain to my family how it was made.
I consider every worker to be a role model for me in her sincerity and love, especially for mature workers. They are the ones from whom I drew support, as despite what they have suffered, they have a persistence in success and work.
I consider all workers as my daughters and my responsibility. I am proud of their work and production.
We can one day see a factory run by women, women with determination and capabilities as well as a love to learn and develop knowledge of the all aspects of this industry.
(DBT): Tell us a bit about Jeddah Graphic Center and how it stands and sets itself apart from other companies?
(DSS): We have a commitment to delivery dates and high quality, and as an employee, I see that they are distinguished by their appreciation of the conditions of female employees and the obligation to pay salaries on time.

Today, in light of the increasing unemployment of the intellectuals, and in light of the support of the local content, we must look at vocational education with a special interest in the field of packaging, which is one of the most important industrial fields in the Kingdom.
Dalal, as director of the women’s section at the Jeddah Graphic Center, is an inspiring story that education is not an obstacle to getting a job, advancing and being able to contribute to society.
She vivifies how women can be supportive of other women; how this field has artistic touches and creative details that can be well performed by professional women.
As a business leader in the field of packaging, the outstanding women who work with me demonstrate their pleasure in work and attention to technical details. Then, after supporting their families with income, even if they could not obtain a formal education due to their life conditions, they have skilled hands that enable them to obtain a source of livelihood. They only need empowerment, and today we are really in a time of empowerment for women.
Jeddah Graphic Center is a wonderful and pioneering example of empowering women in the packaging industry in the region and beyond.

كيف انضممت ؟مدة عملك هل واجهت تحديات؟ ماهو أكبر تحدي لك كامراءه
اسمي دلال درست الثانويه العامه، اشتغلت في مطبعه صغيره لمدة سنتين، كعاملة انتاج لمدة سنه وفي السنه التي تليها كنت مشرفة على الانتاج عدد العاملات كان صغير ( 15 عاملة) لكن لاحقا اغلق القسم النسائي فبدأت ابحث عن عمل وصدف ان وجدت اعلان عن مصنع جدة قبل 7 سنوات فقدمت وبحكم خبرتي السابقة كمشرفه تم اختياري لأكون مشرفة للقسم النسائي. بدأنا ب 30 عاملة ثم زاد العدد الى 85 عاملة وذلك بعد اثبات القدره النسائية على الانتاج المهتم بأدق التفاصيل والعناية اضافة الى الاهتمام بالنظافة من ارتداء القفازات عند العمل وتغطية الشعر وتنظيف المكان.
خلال مسيرة عملي ل 9 سنوات أكبر تحدي يواجهني دائما هو تخوف الفريق من التجربة الجديده فتعزيز الثقه لديهم بامكانياتهن وتجربتي للعمل قبل البدء به امامهن. ايضا، المنافسه بين اعضاء الفريق ومعي بداية حين تم اختياري بين 35 عاملة لاكون المشرفه مما تسبب بالغيرة لكن الآن نحن أسرة واحدة متفاهمين كالعائلة في المنزل الواحد.
؟اكثر ما يمتعك في عملك؟ تجربة استثنائية؟
اكثر ما يمتعني قدرتنا على تسليم العمل قبل الموعد المحدد، اضافة الى انني كمشرفة انا وزميلتي نتعاون بجلب هدايا رمزية من حسابنا الخاص لتشجيع الفريق والعاملات الاكثر انجازا كما نسمح لهم بوقت مستقطع لاخذ استراحات استثنائية لتميزهن.
من الانجازات التي اسعد بذكرها انني تمكنت من عملة خطة انتاج لتنفيذ طلبية في وقت قياسي دون الحاجة الى الاستعانه بفريق خارجي، واسعد بكل انجازاتي في ارضاء العميل واعد نفسي عصامية تعلمت من العمل ومن حب العمل دون الحاجه الى شهادة متخصصة.
اكثر ما يعجبك في بيئة العمل؟ اذا كان هناك من تغيير لتحسين بيئة العمل ماهو بنظرك يمكن ان يكون هذا التغيير؟
اكثر ما يعجبني هو دعم الاداره المتفاني ، اي شيء يحتاجه القسم النسائي يتم تقديمه وتنفيذه فورا ، حيث تم توفير مكان صلاه اضافة الى مكان واسع للاستراحه مجهز بكراسي والطاولات اضافة الى مطبخ مجهز وحمامات نظيفة مع عاملات نظافة. والأهم في بيئة العمل هو وجود الاحترام المتبادل بين الجميع
وان كان من تغيير فيمكن ان يكون بتقسيم المكان حسب مرحلة الانتاج وتوسيعه.
اليوم مع تمكين القيادة للمراءة، كيف ترين المستقبل بالنسبة للشابة السعودية؟
اليوم المراءة مفتوح لها كل المجالات ولها كل التقدير والدعم، معظم العاملات يأتين للمصنع اليوم بسيارتهن الخاصه كما ان البعض يصطحب زميلاته بمقابل رمزي بسيط بدل من أن تدفعه لسائق اجره.
اهلي جدا فخوريين بي ومستمرين في تشجيعي، لدينا الكثير من العاملات الأمهات وهن االأكثر مواظبة وحرصا وداعمات لأسرهن، كما ان بعضهن مطلقات ويحملن مسؤولية المنزل بالكامل، والبعض لأمهات مطلقات فهن من يحمل مسؤولية دخل المنزل ايضا.
ايش دراستك؟ ماهي رسالتك للنساء عن الحياة بعد التخرج؟
درست الثانويه وفقط ورسالتي هي :اذا لم تستطعي اكمال دراستك فالعمل المهني دائما متوفر والحكومة داعمه للمهنيات وهن من المساهمات المهمات في المجتمع. ما اطمح له على الجانب التعليمي هو تقوية لغتي الانجليزيه لسهولة التواصل مع الخبراء الفنيين.
مالذي شجعك لدخول مجال صناعة الطباعة والتغليف؟ لماذا هذا المجال دون غيره؟ كيف ترين النساء في هذا المجال؟ هل يمكن ان نرى مصنع تقوده امراءه يوم ما؟
دخلت عالم هذه الصناعة صدفه لكني استمتعت جدا حتى انني لم أكن اخذ فترات استراحه في بداية عملي فكنت اقضي الساعات دون استشعار للوقت وهذا ماجعلني استمر بها حتى الان و لتسع سنوات متواصله لما فيها من فن وابداع حتى انني اذا وجدت علبه في المنزل افتحها واشرح لأهلي كيف تم صنعها.
اعتبر كل عامله قدوة لي في اخلاصها وحبها خاصة العاملات الناضجات فهن من استمد منهن الدعم فهن رغم مايعانوه من صعوبات الحياه لديهن اصرار دائم على النجاح والعمل، أنا اعتبر كل العاملات كبناتي ومسؤوليتي.. افتخر بعملهن وانتاجهن.
يمكن ان نرى مصنع تديره امرءاه، المراءه لديها الاصرار والامكانيات وتحب التعلم والتطور للالمام بكامل جوانب هذه الصناعة لتقودها يوما ما.
حدثينا اكثر عن المصنع ومالذي يميزه عن غيره؟
لدينا التزام بمواعيد التسليم والجودة العالية، وكموظفة ارى ان مايميزهم تقديرهم لظروف الموظفات، والالتزام بدفع الرواتب في وقتها.
اليوم في ظل تزايد بطالة المثقيين وفي ظل دعم المحتوى المحلي لابد ان ننظر الى التعليم المهني باهتمام خاصة في مجال التغليف والذي يعد من أهم المجالات الصناعية في المملكه، قصة دلال مديرالقسم النسائي في مصنع جدة غرافيك قصة ملهمه عن ان التعليم ليس عائق للحصول على وظيفة والترقي بها والمساهمه في المجتمع من خلالها، دلال تصور لنا كيف يمكن للمراءه ان تكون داعمه للمراءه وكيف ان هذا المجال فيه لمسات فنية وتفاصيل ابداعيه ليس اقدر من المراءه على انجازها باحترافيه.
وأنا كرائدة اعمال في مجال التغليف استشعر هذه المعاني جدا من خلال السيدات المتعففات التي يعملن معي وارى متعتهن في العمل والاهتمام بالتفاصيل الفنية ثم ومن بعد دعم اسرهن بالدخل وان ضنت الحياة عليهن بالحصول على شهادة تعليمية فلديهن الايدي الماهره التي تخولهن للحصول على مصدر رزق، هن لا يحتجن سوى الى التمكين ونحن اليوم حقاً في زمن تمكين المراءة.
