European carton and cartonboard makers body releases consumer packaging perception study

London: Pro Carton, the European Association of Carton and Cartonboard manufacturers, commissioned a study on European consumers has revealed that 77% of the shoppers are willing to pay more for sustainable packaging.

The study team asked 7,000 consumers across seven countries – France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Turkey and the UK – for their views. The survey sheds new light on how public demand for resource-efficient and recyclable packaging is rising among all age groups.

The study found that media coverage on packaging waste polluting the world’s oceans has influenced the purchasing habits of 74% of Europeans, including 72% of UK shoppers. 68% of all respondents said being environmentally friendly is now more, or very important to them.

“Consumer attitudes are changing, and there is a growing consensus that brands and retailers need to act and make necessary changes for both the future of the planet and their businesses,” Pro Carton’s general man- ager Tony Hitchin said. “The environment has never been so high on the agenda and consumers are willing to act to protect it, be that with their feet or their wallets. It’s time for us all – associations, brands, retailers and manufacturers – to listen to consumers and make sure that packaging sustainability is a priority.”
