DuPont’s annual Award for Packaging Innovation contest has chosen a honey pot made from beeswax in Morocco and a soup packet tailored for African markets among its 16 prize winners.
The list of this year’s winners – announced on 16 May – was headed by Unilever, which landed the Diamond award for its new compressed deodorant cans.
But two products from the Middle East and Africa (MEA) won a place among the Silver award winners.
Morocco’s Betamiel was picked out for a honey pot that shows consumers how to ‘bee’ more responsible.
Inspired by the natural environment of honey, Betamiel created containers from beeswax left over from honey harvesting.
The shatter-resistant, natural honey pot can also be put to other uses once its contents have been used up.
DuPont praised Betamiel’s honey pot as “a catalyst to inspire people to use waste material to create packaging”.
A Mondi soup packet designed for Africa landed another Silver award for the region, also in the category of responsible packaging.
Optimised for extended shelf life and environmental savings, the soup packet replaces aluminium foil with a co-extruded paper laminate and tailored barrier properties.
A special sealing polymer cuts sealing temperatures, which saves on energy and makes filling lines more efficient.
A further gain from eliminating aluminium is that metal detection can be used to ensure product safety.
DuPont’s programme this year attracted nearly 200 entries from 31 countries, the second-highest total for entries in the event’s 26-year history, said the company.
