Danone intensifies transition to circular and low-carbon packaging

Badoit’s clear PET bottle supports closed-loop recycling.

In a bid to adhere to environmental objectives outlined by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and forthcoming European regulations, Danone, a prominent player in the food and beverage sector, has escalated its endeavors towards adopting a circular and low-carbon packaging system. This strategic move, as highlighted in a recent report, underscores the company’s alignment with global initiatives aimed at curbing plastic waste and fostering recycling.

Aligned with the principles advocated by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and impending European regulations, Danone has honed its focus on three pivotal areas:

Reduction of Packaging: Danone is committed to curtailing the volume of packaging utilized for its array of products.

Enhancement of Recyclability: The corporation is strategically reimagining its packaging to ensure seamless reusability, recyclability, or compostability. Notably, the transformation of Badoit bottles into clear PET plastic exemplifies this commitment, facilitating more effective recycling processes.

Augmentation of Recovery: Collaborative efforts with partners are underway to fortify collection and recycling frameworks, with the objective of bolstering the retrieval of plastic waste. Noteworthy progress was achieved in 2023, with Danone witnessing a surge in its plastic recovery rate to 58%, up from the preceding year’s 56%.

Signs of progress are discernible, with 84% of Danone’s packaging designed to be reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2023. Moreover, the company has slashed its utilization of virgin plastic by 16% since 2018.

Danone’s unwavering dedication to sustainable packaging underscores a broader industry trend, as companies increasingly endeavor to mitigate their environmental footprint.
