Coca-Cola Nigeria opens advanced Packaging Collection Hub to drive recycling

Coca-Cola HBC CEO Zoran Bogdanovic and industry leaders launch a new packaging hub in Lagos to process 13,000 metric tonnes of plastic yearly, supporting Nigeria’s recycling and circular economy.

The Coca-Cola System in Nigeria, encompassing Coca-Cola Nigeria Limited and the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC), has launched a state-of-the-art Packaging Collection Hub in Apapa, Lagos. It has been designed to process up to 13,000 metric tonnes of plastic bottles annually, which has augmented Nigeria’s recycling infrastructure and fostered a circular economy.

“This facility marks a major step in our efforts to reduce waste by collecting and recycling packaging in Nigeria. It’s not just about sustainability—it’s about supporting local communities, creating jobs, and investing in a cleaner, greener future.” Bogdanovic CEO of Coca-Cola HBC said.

The initiative aligned with Coca-Cola’s global sustainability goals included 35-40% recycled materials in packaging, about 70-75% of bottles and introduced cans into the market by 2035, and supported clean and debris-free environments through partnerships. Over the last decade, Coca-Cola has invested over $1.5 billion in Nigeria, with a renewed commitment of $1 billion over the next five years to enhance economic and environmental contributions.

NBC, with 75 years of operation in Nigeria, led sustainability efforts such as reducing virgin plastic usage, and improved recycling infrastructure. With eight production plants, 11 depots, and 58 commercial territories, NBC continues to strengthen its role as an economic and environmental leader.

Packaging innovation remains a top priority. The company has rolled out KeelClipTM and replaced single-use plastic film for multi-pack cans, and LitePac Top, a 100%-recyclable cardboard wrap for large multipacks. “Packaging can only be circular if it is recyclable. We believe every package has value and life beyond its initial use,” Bogdanovic added.

Coca-Cola HBC’s Mission 2025 strategy focused on climate, packaging, water, ingredients, nutrition, biodiversity, and communities. As Nigeria’s new Packaging Collection Hub has begun operations, Coca-Cola reaffirms its commitment to creating a cleaner, more sustainable future while contributing to local economic growth.
