Carrefour promotes Plastic Free July with sustainable initiatives

Carrefour celebrates Plastic Free July.

Carrefour, operated exclusively by Majid Al Futtaim in the UAE, is marking Plastic Free July by encouraging the adoption of sustainable alternatives across its stores. Starting July 3, the retailer will eliminate all plastic bags every Wednesday, coinciding with International Plastic Bag Free Day.

As part of this initiative, Carrefour is offering customers a 33% discount on their durable juco bags, aimed at promoting reusable options. Customers who bring their own bags or purchase in-store will earn 5 extra SHARE points. Additionally, shoppers spending over AED 40 in the fruit and vegetable section will receive complimentary reusable bags.

This move aligns with Carrefour’s commitment to phase out plastic bags, following Dubai’s ban on specific categories of single-use plastics from June 1. The retailer now offers reusable bags that comply with the new regulations, emphasizing sustainability at affordable prices.

Samar Elmnhrawy, Senior Vice President of Human Capital and Sustainability at Majid Al Futtaim Retail, highlighted the initiative’s significance: “We recognize our responsibility to reduce plastic consumption and encourage sustainable lifestyles. This Plastic Free July, we aim to drive awareness and inspire positive change.”

Carrefour’s efforts are part of its broader sustainability strategy, including partnerships with BEEAH and Sparklo to collect recyclables through Reverse Vending Machines. Since the ban, the retailer has seen a 70% reduction in single-use plastic bag usage, supporting its ‘Choose Better’ program focused on planet-friendly choices.

By promoting accessible and affordable sustainable options, Carrefour aims to empower customers towards environmentally responsible shopping practices, contributing to a greener UAE and aligning with Majid Al Futtaim’s vision of enabling healthier lifestyles.
