B!POD, a business unit of SAES Getters, has partnered with chemicals giant SABIC to launch a line of food vacuum system containers made from ocean-bound plastic (OBP). The containers utilize SABIC’s circular polypropylene (PP), sourced from its TRUCIRCLE™ portfolio, and are designed to meet stringent food safety standards while addressing the global issue of plastic waste.
SABIC’s Global Director of Circular Economy, Khaled Al-Jalawi, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “We are very pleased about working with SAES Getters to help consumers meet the challenge of improving food preservation with a powerful vacuum system that uses containers molded in OBP-based SABIC PP.”
The ocean-bound plastic, collected within 50 kilometers of coastlines, is converted into plastic feedstock through advanced recycling methods. This material, with 50% OBP content, replaces traditional virgin plastic, marking a major step in promoting circularity within the plastics economy.
Chief Innovation Officer at SAES Getters, Ginevra della Porta, highlighted the environmental impact of the innovation. “This innovation embraces sustainability from the very concept to end use,” she said. Each container, available in colors representing endangered species, is designed to reduce food waste and plastic pollution.
According to della Porta, reusable containers like these could eliminate the need for over 300 non-recyclable plastic bags per person annually, preventing the release of 30 kg of CO2 into the atmosphere. The new containers are available across Europe, Switzerland, and the UK, with plans for expansion into Asia in 2025.
