Borealis, a prominent member of the Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty, has voiced its strong support for the development of a legally binding UN treaty to address the urgent issue of plastic pollution. This treaty represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to tackle the crisis on a global scale, by promoting a shift towards a circular economy for plastics.
The UN Environmental Assembly’s adoption of the treaty’s policy recommendations in March 2022 marked a significant milestone in the collective efforts to combat plastic pollution. Borealis, alongside financial institutions and NGOs, shares the vision of the treaty as a key policy mechanism for driving progress in critical areas. These areas include reducing plastic production, promoting a circular economy approach to plastic use, increasing the circulation of necessary plastics, and preventing and remediating micro- and macro-plastic leakage into the environment.
As part of their commitment to addressing plastic pollution, Borealis became an early signatory to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and WWF’s call for a UN treaty. The company is actively engaged in The Global Commitment led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and has pledged to sell 350 kilotons of post-consumer recycled plastics annually by 2025.
Borealis proudly joins the Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty, convened by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and WWF, in their shared mission to accelerate progress towards a circular economy and eliminate plastic pollution. The company is dedicated to supporting the Coalition’s initiatives and driving progress internally.
Borealis has been at the forefront of circular transformation, combining a comprehensive understanding of the plastics lifecycle with breakthrough technologies. They offer a wide range of circular products, including those made from biomass, mechanically and chemically recycled feedstock. The company continues to invest in recycling technologies and innovation capabilities to lead the way in circular transformation.
Looking ahead, Borealis has set ambitious goals aligned with the principles of the circular economy. By 2025, they aim to increase the capacity of circular product solutions to 600 kilotons, with a target of 1.8 million tonnes by 2030. These efforts will not only reduce plastic waste but also contribute to significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
Furthermore, Borealis is committed to increasing the share of renewable energy sources in its operations. By 2025, they aim to have 40% of their electricity mix derived from renewables, with a long-term goal of 100% renewable electricity in specific operations. The company is also actively working to eliminate non-emerging flaring and minimize plastic pellet loss during operations.
Borealis’ dedication to circularity and sustainability underscores their commitment to a world free from waste, environmental harm, and resource depletion. With their active involvement in the Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty and ongoing initiatives, Borealis is playing a crucial role in advancing a sustainable future and combatting the global plastic pollution crisis.
