Bluewater urges bottle manufacturers to take responsibility for plastic waste

On World Refill Day, Bluewater, a leading purified water and beverage company, called for a significant shift in the approach to single-use plastic bottles. Bluewater, based in Sweden, advocates that bottle manufacturers should be responsible for the collection and disposal of the single-use plastic bottles they produce.

World Refill Day, celebrated annually on June 16, promotes a refill and reuse culture. Bluewater CEO Bengt Rittri emphasized the importance of holding bottle manufacturers accountable for their products’ entire lifecycle to address the pervasive impact of single-use plastic. “Such a bold stance would drive transformative change in the global effort to combat plastic pollution,” stated Rittri. He urged governments, businesses, and individuals to support this initiative for better management of plastic waste.

Rittri highlighted Bluewater’s commitment to mitigating the negative effects of single-use plastics on ecosystems, marine life, and human health. For over a decade, Bluewater has provided sustainable water and beverage solutions, focusing on reducing the consumption of disposable plastic bottles. The company’s advanced water dispensers, used at global sporting events and venues, aim to eliminate the need for single-use bottles. Additionally, Bluewater’s under-sink water purification stations enable consumers and businesses to access purified tap water, reducing the reliance on plastic bottles.

“The stark reality of 600 billion single-use plastic bottles being produced annually, leading to environmental and health crises, is driving Bluewater to intensify its advocacy efforts,” said Rittri. He called for decisive action to hold bottling companies accountable, expressing concern about the health-threatening chemicals associated with plastic waste.
