Bio Food Unveils Eco-Packaging for Milk Bottles, Outlines Sustainability Vision

Bio Food, a prominent player in Kenya’s food and beverage industry, has revealed its groundbreaking strides in sustainability with the unveiling of a new eco-conscious packaging solution for its milk bottles. The company’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint is evident in its determination to explore sustainable alternatives across its product range.

In a decisive move towards more environmentally responsible practices, Bio Food has developed a milk bottle crafted from Kenyan recycled PET (rPET). This innovative packaging innovation is set to be rolled out in the near future. This breakthrough aligns seamlessly with the company’s overarching vision to champion sustainability at every stage of its operations.

“Sustainability is thus at the heart of everything we do at Bio. Whether it is in product development, route planning of our distribution trucks, or the running of our factory, we make decisions that consider the wellbeing of people and the planet,” the company affirmed. This commitment underscores Bio Food’s  determination to integrate sustainable practices into every facet of its business, driving positive change within the industry.

The remarkable advancements in Bio Food’s sustainability journey were unveiled in the 2.0 version of the Bio Sustainability Report, which was officially launched by Hon. Mutahi Kagwe, the Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Health.

Some of the notable milestones achieved by Bio Food include:

  • A 30% reduction in plastic usage for milk bottles and the use of 100% repurposed Kenyan plastic for yogurt cups.
  • Carbon footprint offsetting of 100% from gate to shelf.
  • Over 99% of factory waste recycled.
  • Ensuring entry-level staff receive 181% of the minimum wage along with various benefits such as training, medical insurance, and product discounts.
  • Community engagement through initiatives like the recycling-focused “Bio Take Back Bins.”

Bio Food’s commitment to sustainability is also evidenced in their packaging choices. The plastic content in their fresh milk bottles has been reduced by 25%. Notably, the bottle’s transformation from opaque to semi-transparent material has significantly improved its recyclability. Additionally, all yogurt pots are now composed of 100% recycled plastic.

While the negative environmental impact of plastic packaging has gained increased attention, Bio Food conducted a comprehensive third-party review of different packaging options. This evaluation confirmed that, despite challenges, plastic remains the most sustainable choice due to Kenya’s current recycling infrastructure.

Bio Food actively participates in environmental stewardship through its membership in PETCO Kenya, where a levy on packaging use incentivizes recycling efforts. The company also holds a position on the board of KEPRO, an association committed to ensuring manufacturers shoulder their environmental packaging responsibilities.

Bio Food remains dedicated to relentless innovation in sustainability. The upcoming introduction of milk bottles made from Kenyan rPET showcases the company’s ongoing commitment to progress. Moreover, their steadfast resolve to identify sustainable alternatives, exemplified by the compostable cheese packaging, sets a benchmark for responsible practices in the industry.

“We are proud of what we have achieved, and we are humbled by the immense journey that is still ahead of us. We are committed to making tangible steps every day towards sustainability,” the company emphasized. Among the upcoming initiatives are new solar installations, the incorporation of recycled PET, and a close collaboration with farmers to achieve a comprehensive range of sustainable objectives.

As Bio Food propels its sustainability agenda forward, it sets an inspiring example for the industry, paving the way for tangible environmental progress while delivering high-quality products to consumers.
