Düsseldorf, June 2024 — At drupa 2024, Asahi Photoproducts made a significant impact with its innovative and sustainable solutions. Packaging MEA’s Ben Daniel spoke with Dieter Niederstadt, Technical Marketing Manager at Asahi Photoproducts, to explore the company’s latest advancements and their reception at the trade fair.

Niederstadt highlighted a noticeable shift in the event’s attendee profile. “This year, brand owners are more engaged, showing interest in the entire packaging value chain, including the printing process, which is a new trend,” he observed. This change reflects a broader industry move towards sustainability, with companies keen to document their eco-friendly practices.

Central to Asahi’s showcase are their new products aimed at reducing solvent use in the printing process. The AFP-R plate, designed to cut solvent consumption by 30%, was introduced as part of this initiative. “We developed the AFP-R plate with a reduced solvent formula, and it has already earned an FDA sustainability award,” Niederstadt said.

Asahi Photoproducts has set a clear target: to transition completely from solvent-based to water-wash plates by 2030. This goal is part of a broader effort to enhance sustainability in the printing industry. Niederstadt detailed three new water-wash plates tailored for different applications: UV flexo, flexible packaging, and paper and recycled film substrates. These plates utilize 100% water, without additives, facilitating better wastewater recycling.

In addition to product innovation, Asahi’s commitment to sustainability is underscored by their Carbon Trust certification. “We undergo a rigorous third-party verification process and life cycle analysis from cradle to gate. This ensures we meet our annual carbon reduction targets,” Niederstadt explained. The certification process also involves purchasing carbon credits to offset emissions and setting future reduction goals, which are audited yearly.

Addressing readers in the Middle East and Africa, Niederstadt emphasized the global nature of the sustainability push. “Sustainability is a worldwide concern. While there might be regional differences in timing, the holistic approach demanded by brand owners will influence the Middle East’s packaging industry.”

As drupa 2024 continues, Asahi Photoproducts stands out with its dedication to sustainable innovation, responding to the evolving needs of the printing and packaging industry. Their efforts are setting a benchmark for environmental responsibility and technological advancement.
