Amcor’s all-paper compostable packaging solution

An all-paper compostable packaging solution for butter and margarine

Amcor Flexibles has created a new compostable product made entirely from paper. According to Amcor Flexibles’ Latin America team, the new all-paper solution is as effective as the old product, which was made from paper and aluminum, so the butter and margarine have the same shelf life and the packaging remains grease-proof.

The greaseproof paper used is certified by the European compostable governing body TUV as compostable both at home and in an industrial setting.

When given the challenge of creating a more sustainable packaging solution for butter and margarine for Grupo Agroindustrial Numar S.A. in Costa Rica, Amcor’s team created a new compostable product made entirely from paper.

The team at Amcor Flexibles Peru  also overcame a key challenge with all-paper packaging in designing this solution, managing to create a product that is just as foldable as its predecessor as well as retains all the advantages of the traditional product, the all-paper wrapper is 38% lighter than the aluminum and paper lamination, with a carbon footprint that is 81% smaller.

The company states that this foldable, compostable all-paper packaging is one of many products that have come from the more than $100 million that Amcor invests each year into research and development on producing more sustainable packaging and using more recycled content.
