Aldi introduces recycled plastic in crisp packaging to reduce single-use plastics

Aldi’s new crisp packaging includes recycled plastic, part of its commitment to reducing single-use plastics.

Aldi has taken a significant step towards reducing single-use plastic consumption by introducing recycled plastic in its own-label crisp packaging. This move marks the UK supermarket’s commitment to sustainability, with a minimum of 35% recycled content now incorporated into its Specially Selected Hand Cooked range, already rolled out nationwide. Aldi plans to extend this initiative to its own-label popcorn and lentil chips by the end of the year.

The switch is expected to eliminate 78 tonnes of virgin plastic annually and is part of Aldi’s broader goal to include 50% recycled content in its plastic packaging by 2025.

Luke Emery, Plastics and Packaging Director at Aldi, emphasized the supermarket’s dedication to reducing plastic waste, stating, “Increasing the recycled content in our crisp packaging is just one way we are helping our customers to reduce their environmental impact, with all these little changes adding up to make an even bigger difference.”

This initiative is the latest in Aldi’s ongoing efforts to reduce its environmental impact and explore alternative packaging solutions. Previously, Aldi introduced 100% recycled plastic (rPet) in select own-brand washing up liquid bottles and became the first supermarket in England and Wales to transition its own-brand soft drinks and bottled water range to 100% recycled plastic (rPet).

Aldi’s commitment to sustainability and proactive approach in addressing plastic pollution highlights the importance of such measures in the retail sector’s journey towards greater environmental responsibility.
