Ajman, UAE – In accordance with Ministerial Resolution No. 380 of 2022, which regulates single-use products in the country’s markets, and aligned with Federal Law No. 2 of 2018 on Integrated Waste Management, Ajman’s Department of Municipality and Planning has announced a prohibition on the use of single-use plastic bags across all shopping centers and retail outlets in the Emirate of Ajman. Effective January 2024, this decision aims to address environmental concerns surrounding plastic waste.
Executive Director of the Department’s Public Health and Environment Sector, Eng. Khaled Moeen Al Hosani, emphasized the municipality’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainability. “We are dedicated to addressing environmental issues, including plastic bags, which pose a real threat to all living beings,” Al Hosani stated.
Al Hosani highlighted the ongoing development of eco-friendly alternatives in the UAE, emphasizing the transition towards reducing the production and usage of plastic bags and products. “This shift aims to control the usage of plastic products and single-use bags, ultimately reducing plastic waste that harms the environment and promoting sustainability,” he added.
The Department announced a three-month grace period for businesses to implement the ban and transition to eco-friendly alternatives. Additionally, a fee of 25 Fils will be applied to each bag, with transparency in displaying the cost to the buyer.
This move reflects the UAE’s broader initiative to create a plastic-free environment and underscores the government’s commitment to sustainable practices.
