Siegwerk has introduced a new NC-free toolbox designed to support the development of recyclable flexible polyolefin packaging solutions. The toolbox combines Siegwerk’s established nitrocellulose (NC)-free ink portfolio with new advancements, offering solutions for lamination and surface applications in gravure and flexographic printing.
The initiative aligns with the European Union’s evolving regulatory landscape, which increasingly emphasizes packaging recyclability as part of a Circular Economy. Nitrocellulose-based inks, while historically valued for their resistance, fast drying, and adhesion properties, pose challenges to recycling processes. According to Dr. Björn Ewig, Head of Technology Flexible Packaging EMEA at Siegwerk, these inks can lead to odors, discoloration, and reduced mechanical strength of recyclates.
“Packaging structures with NC-based inks are under growing scrutiny,” said Dr. Ewig. “Our NC-free toolbox is a milestone, offering a new generation of polyurethane-based resins that enhance surface resistance. This allows customers to achieve recyclable flexible packaging with performance comparable to NC-based solutions.”
The toolbox, initially available in the EMEA region, offers a comprehensive range of color, white, and overprint varnishes for both lamination and surface applications. Siegwerk’s solutions are fully compliant with current recycling guidelines and available as ready-to-use inks or masterbatch systems.
Dr. Hanns Martin Kaiser, Vice President Flexible Packaging EMEA at Siegwerk, highlighted the flexibility of the toolbox. “With our NC-free solutions, customers can develop recyclable PE and PP structures without compromising packaging or process performance,” he said.
A key feature of the toolbox is Siegwerk’s proprietary polyurethane resin technology, which serves as an alternative to nitrocellulose. “This in-house development demonstrates our expertise in creating high-performing, recyclable solutions,” said Dr. Kaiser. Siegwerk aims to continue optimizing its formulations to advance circular packaging designs in line with recycling standards.
The NC-free toolbox represents Siegwerk’s commitment to fostering sustainable innovations in the flexible packaging sector.
