Giesecke+Devrient (G+D) has unveiled its new Smart Label, a thin, credit card-sized tracking solution designed to integrate packaging with IoT functionality. Developed in collaboration with Sensos, this innovative product aims to provide cost-effective and precise location tracking for diverse applications, including parcel delivery, fleet management, and monitoring luxury goods.
The Smart Label combines hardware, an integrated SIM (iSIM), IoT connectivity, and a cloud-based platform for managing connections and firmware updates. Its motion sensors detect movement and acceleration, while GPS ensures sub-10-meter accuracy under optimal conditions. The solution also supports customizable reporting frequencies and configurations, offering businesses flexibility in tracking and securing their assets during transit.
Additional features include an open-close sensor for tamper protection, automated proof of delivery, and a temperature monitor to safeguard perishable items. Activated by peeling and applying, the reusable Smart Label is certified for air travel, making it a versatile and lightweight option for logistics.
“G+D is committed to creating robust solutions for the transport and logistics industry. Following the success of our first-generation Smart Label, we’ve developed an even more compact and accurate solution,” said Sharath Muddaiah, Head of Portfolio Strategy for IoT Solutions at G+D. “This end-to-end offering includes dedicated service support and a warranty, setting new standards in our industry.”
The Smart Label’s potential applications extend from routine parcel tracking to monitoring high-value assets. For instance, Track & Pay, an early adopter, utilizes the label to integrate shipment tracking with payment processing, triggering payments upon delivery. Joerg Hoerster, CEO of TNP Global Trade GmbH, stated, “The Smart Label’s compact design and active tracking capabilities make it a competitive solution for our clients.”
The G+D Smart Label is available for purchase through G+D’s IoT Shop in Germany and the U.S.
