KHS introduces Nature MultiPack with cardboard handle for eco-friendly packaging

The BottleClip Carrier allows for the transportation of packs ranging from two to eight PET bottles, with capacities of 250 milliliters to two liters each.

KHS Group has unveiled a new addition to its Nature MultiPack solution, integrating a kraft paper carrying handle as a replacement for plastic film. The innovation aligns with growing demands for sustainable packaging driven by consumer expectations and regulatory pressures.

The Nature MultiPack reduces material consumption by 85% compared to traditional shrink film methods, relying on minimal adhesive to bind PET bottles and aluminum cans into packs. According to KHS, this approach not only cuts material use but also lowers energy consumption by up to two-thirds in production.

The latest enhancement, developed in collaboration with Hinojosa Packaging Group, introduces the BottleClip Carrier, a kraft paper handle designed for convenience and recyclability. The handle attaches to two bottles in the pack using pre-punched tabs that hook securely under the bottle necks. “We focused on creating a solution that is functional and straightforward for machine application,” said KHS project manager Manfred van Triel.

Practical and User-Friendly Design

The cardboard handle addresses common issues with conventional plastic handles, such as discomfort when carrying heavier packs. The BottleClip Carrier’s design protects hands by bending upward during use, preventing sharp edges from causing discomfort. The handle can be easily removed and recycled alongside paper waste, further enhancing its sustainability credentials.

The system supports a range of pack sizes, accommodating two to eight bottles with volumes from 250 milliliters to two liters. “We’ve ensured a uniform design across all sizes by making minimal adjustments to the punching dies,” van Triel added.

Efficient Production and Logistics

KHS prioritized seamless machine integration for the new handle. The BottleClip Carrier is supplied in cartridges for easy loading, reducing operator involvement and space requirements. The updated module can save up to four meters of machine length compared to conventional systems, making it ideal for producers with limited space.

The industry response has been strong, with several projects already underway. “This multipack represents a benchmark in material efficiency,” van Triel stated, emphasizing its potential to reshape sustainable packaging in the beverage sector.
