Smurfit Westrock has introduced its EasySplit Bag-in-Box® design, developed to help customers comply with the upcoming Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). This regulation will require all packaging to achieve at least 80% recyclability. For Bag-in-Box® products, the key challenge is ensuring that the box and bag are easily separable for effective recycling.
The EasySplit design addresses this by simplifying the separation of the bag and box, enabling each component to be recycled in its respective stream. When properly separated, the recyclability rate for the packaging can exceed 90%. However, if the components are not separated, the package will be evaluated based on the dominant material, usually cardboard, and the recyclability rate may drop to 75% or lower, especially if the plastic bag hinders the paper recycling process.
Massimiliano Bianchi, CEO of Smurfit Westrock Bag-in-Box, emphasized the urgency of the issue: “With the European Commission set to decide on the methodology within the next three years, it is imperative to act swiftly and demonstrate a viable solution to the challenge.” He added, “Smurfit Westrock is leading the charge in preparing the packaging industry for future regulations by launching our EasySplit Bag-in-Box® design.”
The launch of the EasySplit design aligns with the company’s ongoing efforts to promote proper recycling practices. Bianchi concluded, “As we continue to educate consumers and stakeholders about the importance of proper recycling practices, Smurfit Westrock remains dedicated to driving positive change and demonstrating environmental stewardship.”
