Amcor, in collaboration with Mespack, has introduced a 2-liter recycle-ready stand-up pouch for home care products such as liquid soaps, cleaners, and laundry detergents. This innovation addresses the technical challenges of larger-format pouches while meeting sustainability demands.
Until now, recycle-ready pouches have been limited to sizes between 1 and 1.5 liters due to challenges in durability, seal integrity, and drop resistance. The newly developed pouch overcomes these obstacles through extensive R&D and advanced machinery. Mespack’s H570 machine played a pivotal role in the innovation, ensuring precise temperature control and robust sealing essential for larger formats. The machine’s features, such as spout preheating technology and leak-proof sealing adjustments, are key to maintaining high performance.
Amcor’s AmPrima® recycle-ready material forms the basis of the pouch, which meets the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) for recyclability. Additionally, the material can incorporate post-consumer recycled (PCR) content, aligning with industry goals for circular packaging solutions.
“Refill pouches are an ideal solution for home care products,” an Amcor representative stated. “They use significantly less plastic compared to traditional HDPE bottles and can reduce packaging weight by up to 90%.” A lifecycle assessment by Amcor shows these pouches have an 80% lower carbon footprint compared to rigid plastic bottles.
The design supports refill systems, enabling consumers to reuse bottles and reduce overall plastic waste. This aligns with growing consumer preferences, with 23% of European shoppers actively seeking refillable packaging options.
The 2-liter pouches, designed for durability and sustainability, will be available to customers starting November 2024, marking a significant step toward eco-friendly packaging in the home care sector.
