SIG has received formal recognition from the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) for its SIG Terra RecShield D bag-in-box package. This package, designed for post-mix beverages such as syrup, has been acknowledged for meeting high recyclability standards outlined in the APR Design® Guide for Plastics Recyclability.
The APR Design® for Recyclability Recognition validates that the packaging design is compatible with North American recycling systems. Third-party testing, conducted by Plastics Forming Enterprises (PFE), confirmed the package’s recyclability. The SIG Terra RecShield D bag-in-box, which includes a polyethylene closure and evacuation device, was reprocessed into blown film during testing, ensuring the entire package is recyclable.
SIG’s innovation aims to simplify packaging structures and reduce waste, aligning with sustainability goals. The SIG Terra RecShield D laminate, a key component of the package, is a durable film designed for the distribution chain. It also features the SIG Terra Versi Connect 2750 fitment, which ensures over 99.8% product evacuation, reducing food waste.
Brent Haynam, Director of Commercial Engineering and Sustainability at SIG, noted, “As companies strive for net zero, recyclability is a key lever in their sustainability journeys. Innovating with recycle-ready solutions are foundational steps to this journey.”
Teresa Bernal-Lara, Ph.D., Global Head of Film Development at SIG, explained that the SIG Terra RecShield D laminate incorporates a nylon compatibilizer to enhance recyclability by reducing the size of nylon domains, allowing the material to be reprocessed without compromising performance.
The SIG Terra RecShield D bag-in-box package is now available as part of SIG’s Terra portfolio, which focuses on circularity and reducing environmental impact through sustainable packaging solutions.
