Henkel and Panverta collaborate to improve sustainable packaging for dry foods

Henkel and Panverta’s improved oxygen barrier films reduce packaging layers while protecting dry foods.

Henkel Adhesive Technologies and Indonesia-based film manufacturer PT. Panverta Cakrakencana have developed a new film solution that enhances oxygen barrier performance in packaging for dry foods. This collaboration aims to reduce the number of layers in packaging, addressing environmental concerns by minimizing waste. Traditionally, packaging for products like flour, rice, and pasta requires multiple layers to protect against air, light, and moisture. However, such multi-material packaging is difficult to recycle.

Henkel and Panverta’s solution improves the oxygen barrier properties of metallized cast polypropylene (CPP) films to less than 0.5 cc/m².day and CPP with aluminum oxide coating (AIOx) films to less than 8 cc/m².day. These innovations enable packaging manufacturers to switch from multi-material designs to mono-material polypropylene (PP) without compromising product protection.

“Henkel has supported us throughout the entire process,” said Marcus Hengky, Sales Manager at Panverta. “This collaboration allows us to offer brand owners thinner, more efficient packaging solutions that contribute to the circular economy.”

Henkel’s role in the collaboration involves its recyclable Loctite Liofol oxygen barrier coating, which enhances the performance of mono-material packaging. The coating, certified by cyclos-HTP and recognized by the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR), provides excellent oxygen barrier properties and can be applied to oriented polypropylene (OPP) and polyethylene (PE) films at high speeds.

The new packaging solution will be showcased at Tokyo Pack 2024, where packaging manufacturers and brand owners can explore its potential at Henkel’s booth 1C17.
